From June 17 to 21, 2024, a landmark capacity-building workshop took place, marking a significant step forward in the establishment of a circularity system in the bioplastics industry in the Philippines. Organized through a joint effort by the Korean and Philippine governments initiated by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Board of Investments (BOI) with the support from KMAC, KEXIM Bank, KTR and the Korean Ministry of Economy & Finance. The program aimed to enhance the sustainability of bioplastics, reduce environmental impact, and foster innovation in biodegradable plastic technologies in the Philippines.

This initiative underscores the collaborative spirit between the two nations, focusing on sharing knowledge, technologies, and best practices in Korea. The workshop was attended by nine Filipino delegates, representing various sectors from the Board of Investments (BOI) – Resource-based Industries Services, Climate Change Commission (CCC),Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD),Philippine Plastics Industry Association (PPIA), Philippine Alliance for Recycling and Material Sustainability (PARMS) and AKO Packaging, owned and operated by Sustainable and Compostable Horizons Industry Group Inc. (SACHI-Group) a leading local bioplastics manufacturing company in the Philippines.

AKO Packaging's involvement is particularly noteworthy, as it highlights the critical role of local enterprises in driving sustainable practices within the industry. Held in the Republic of Korea, the workshop featured a series of lectures, seminars, and tours of cutting-edge research facilities. Experts from renowned institutions like the Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR), Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) delivered insightful presentations on biodegradable plastic technologies and circular economy models.
